One piece of advice I'd give to respiratory therapists considering a specialization is to really reflect on what aspects of patient care resonate most with you—whether it's critical care, pediatrics, or pulmonary rehabilitation. For me, I chose to specialize in neonatal respiratory care because I found the fragility and resilience of newborns incredibly motivating. The work is demanding but deeply rewarding, and it pushed me to develop highly specific skills and knowledge that made a tangible difference in outcomes. I recommend shadowing specialists in different areas, asking questions about daily challenges, and considering the long-term career opportunities each path offers. Choosing a specialty isn't just about where the job market is, but where your passion and strengths align. That alignment has kept me engaged and growing throughout my career.
