I've said it before, but I'll never forget the shock of an unexpected expense when I first started racing motorcycles. I was all fired up, ready to hit the track and then... BOOM! I was hit with a massive bill for crash damage repairs. It was my first year of racing, so I was still getting accustomed to the bike and the track. I had had a couple of close calls, but nothing major... until that lap. I lost control of the bicycle and slipped into the gravel trap. We all know what it's like to push the limit on the street, and the damage was pretty extensive; bent forks, cracked fairings and a mangled exhaust system were the result. The repair bill was breathtaking - more than $5,000! I was not ready for that level of expense. Fuel, tires, and entry fees were accounted for in my budget, but crash damage repairs were not on the agenda. In order to save up for an unexpected bill, I had to think outside of the box. Time to put away a bit of my racing budget for crash damage repairs. I also set out learning and acquiring safety equipment, like better protective wear and a new helmet. Also, I ensured I inspected my bike carefully before every ride, checking for any wear that could result in a pricey crash. So my advice to others is to always prepare for anything. Motorcycle racing is inherently dangerous and the most accomplished of riders fall victim to crashes. Be prepared to make adjustments in the budget, and consult others, more experienced than you, if necessary. Also, it's wise to pay for a crash damage protection plan or insurance policy. These will reduce the money lost from a crash, and give you peace of mind when you're on track. Finally, always keep in mind that the safety for your utmost priority. Buy the best safety equipment you can afford and never skimp on safety to save a dime. And while this desire to race is a wonderful thrill, it's not worth putting your financial stability or, even more so, your safety at risk. Stay aware, be prepared, and keep your wits about you both on and off the track!
