Immediate past president of the third oldest college in the US, former law school dean and legal academic with an established scholarly record on the criminal justice system, sentencing and collateral sanctions. I take a critical and comparative (aka focus on Europe) look at the US criminal justice and higher education system, with the goal of improving them. I am an elected member of the exclusive American Law Institute, the European Law Institute, the Council of Criminal Justice, and the International Society of Comparative Law. Currently working on a book on the state of the US criminal justice system, how we got here, and what it'll take for a meaningful and lasting turn to greater public safety and a smaller and fairer criminal justice system.
