Good day, Prioritizing and pacing your day according to your energy levels is one of the best tactics to manage unpredictable days with a chronic illness. I measure how many spoons are available to me using the spoon theory and adjust my plans accordingly, prioritizing what is needed for the day while recognising that the non urgent tasks should either be postponed or delegated. On my harder days, I remind myself of the importance of being kind to myself, giving myself rest without shame, and using aids or systems that allow me to be productive in a way that I can sustain. Maintaining a loose schedule and letting other people know what I can or can't do in a given period also help ensure I can fulfill health and responsibilities as closely as possible. But another useful coping mechanism for the very unpredictable days with chronic illness is to have a backup plan for basic tasks. I have a list of high, medium and low energy activities so that I manage my workload according to my feelings. On my bad days, I concentrate on graceless versions of what I have to accomplish, like using voice to text rather than typing or crafting a task into smaller subsections. I also engage in mindful self care, like hydrating, stretching or deep breathing, to reduce symptoms. I reach out to my support network family, colleagues or a caregiver as needed to reschedule commitments or request help. Accepting that some days, rest is necessary and giving myself the grace to do so, keeps me maintaining long term well being while also making progress toward my goals.
