The best advice to give someone who's afraid of making a mistake while volunteering is to encourage them to make as many mistakes as possible, because that's how you learn. In most careers the mistakes you make won't be career killers. Before people learn how something works, they need to figure out what doesn't work. And you can only learn that by doing the wrong things. If you go down the wrong path multiple times, eventually you stumble upon the right one.
