I'm a big fan of technology in medicine. In fact, we already use AI in our office. But AI simply cannot read the room... not yet. For example, if a patient says everything is fine, but is visibly nervous, AI can't sense body language and make the patient more comfortable. Or, if a patient doesn't want to talk about trauma, AI can't pivot the conversation, nor offer genuine empathy. Timing is critical too. A smile now and then, an appropriate joke now and then - these things establish rapport. AI struggles with rapport, and that is half the battle. Current AI cannot respond/react the way a human intuitively can.

A kind smile, eye contact, and simply listening carefully can make them feel more comfortable—something AI cannot do. I can often sense when a patient is nervous or confused just by their body language or tone. This helps me explain things better and offer the right support, which a machine can't match. 2. In primary care, how does the physician-patient relationship influence diagnosis or treatment in a way AI tools can't? Building trust with my patients makes a big difference. When patients feel comfortable with me, they share more about their symptoms and concerns. This helps me catch problems that AI might miss, like stress-related vision issues or early signs of eye disease. Knowing a patient's life and feelings also helps me give advice and treatments that fit their personal needs—something AI can't fully do. 3. Can you describe a situation where your emotional intuition helped in a diagnosis or treatment where AI would likely fail? One patient came in with blurry vision, but all the tests looked normal. As we talked, I sensed that she was very stressed and not sleeping well. I asked more and learned that her stress and lack of sleep were causing the problem. An AI would have likely marked her vision as fine and sent her home. Because I picked up on her emotions, I was able to help her manage stress and sleep better, which improved her vision.
In mental health care, one critical aspect that AI struggles to replicate is the nuanced understanding of a patient's emotional state which often unfolds through both verbal and non-verbal communication. As a psychiatrist, I've noticed that subtle clues like body posture, eye contact, and tone of voice provide invaluable insights into a patient's emotions and thoughts. Furthermore, empathy plays a monumental role in establishing trust and therapeutic alliance with patients. In my practice, I've seen firsthand how empathetic interactions can drastically enhance patient engagement and treatment adherence. When patients feel understood and validated, they're more likely to open up and participate actively in their recovery process. AI tools, despite their growing accuracy in diagnosing and suggesting treatments, can't replicate the genuine warmth and reassurance that comes from a human interaction. So always remember, in fields where emotional exchange is key, technology should be used as an aid and not a replacement.
