I've always been a huge fan of opera. But over the years as my musical ear has matured, I find myself drawn to how the composers use subtle orchestration techniques to create emotional depth. I'm also noticing more nuance and intention in the way different singers interpret the role and how the intricate rhytms and phrasing of their performance help bring characters to life. This has helped me connect on a deeper level with the emotional and phychological depth of the storyline.
I wasn't always an opera enthusiast. Initially, the elaborate staging and classical singing seemed a bit distant from my everyday musical tastes, which primarily included rock and pop. However, as I've matured, so has my appreciation for the depth and complexity of opera. The turning point came when I attended a live performance of Puccini's "La Bohème". The raw emotion and exquisite orchestration completely captivated me, transforming my perspective on what music could express. Now, what draws me most to opera is the incredible way it combines so many art forms. From the intricate costumes and dramatic storytelling to the powerful orchestration and vocal performances, every element is meticulously crafted to enhance the storytelling. I’ve grown particularly fond of the way themes of love, tragedy, and triumph are portrayed with such intensity. Every opera offers not just a show, but an immersive emotional journey. This rich blend of elements makes each performance a unique and intriguing experience, continually deepening my appreciation for this magnificent artform.
My appreciation for opera started out as pure curiosity--I wanted to learn how to sing, and opera was the foundation. The discipline, the breath control, the power behind every note... it's not just music, it's athletic. At first, I studied it purely as a tool. But over time, it became something I genuinely connected with. Now, I find myself drawn to the emotion packed into every phrase. You don't even need to understand the language to feel it. As the founder of TWOFEW, a piano rock band signed to a label, I've carried that operatic emotion into our songs. That depth, that drama--it taught me how to deliver a lyric like it matters, every single time. What's more, opera gave me range, both vocally and emotionally. I didn't expect that. It opened me up to styles I might've brushed off otherwise and taught me that power and vulnerability aren't opposites--they're often the same thing, just in different keys.
