I'm a real estate lawyer and I absolutely love my job. I'm based in Texas where the real estate market is incredibly active right now. For me, the best part of working in real estate law is the complexity of it. You need to be able to keep up with the evolving laws but also delve into history to discover something overlooked that could help you win a case for your client. This leads to the hardest part of practicing real estate law, which is keeping up with the vast and constantly changing laws. This can be particularly challenging if you're in court and your opponent brings up a new legal decision that was published just the day before. However, if you manage to stay current with the laws and secure a good outcome, you feel a great sense of achievement knowing you've assisted a client in such a demanding field.
As a real estate lawyer, my favorite part of the profession is helping clients achieve their property ownership dreams. Last month, I represented a young family in closing on their first home. They had been searching for over a year and faced multiple rejections before finally finding "the one." Being able to guide them through the paperwork and legal processes and see the smiles and tears of joy at closing was incredibly rewarding. Beyond just facilitating transactions, I enjoy educating clients about complex legal aspects of real estate. Early in my career, I had a client nearly make a costly mistake by needing to understand the home inspection contingencies in her purchase agreement fully. Taking the time to clearly explain legalese and ensure an understanding of risks has helped many of my clients feel more empowered in their decisions. My work also allows me to build long-term relationships. Some of my earliest clients from over a decade ago still come to me for counsel regarding refinances, rental properties, and other matters. Seeing families grow and needs change over the years has been very fulfilling. Overall, helping people achieve security and happiness through homeownership is what I find most gratifying about my career in real estate law.

The fusion of legal solutions with business outcomes is particularly rewarding because it directly impacts clients' success. Furthermore, through teaching real estate law at the University of Arkansas, I have the opportunity to reflect on and convey the dynamic nature of property law to future legal professionals. This aspect of my profession keeps me engaged with the latest developments and encourages a continuous learning and application cycle that is intellectually enriching and practically beneficial in real-world scenarios. This educational role reinforces my expertise and allows me to share practical case studies, like creating an LLC for real estate, that have real implications on protecting investments and expanding opportunities in the real estate industry.

Protecting their interests during negotiations. Seeing the smile on their face at closing - that's what I love most.
