Assistive listening devices provide a significant improvement in hearing specifically when you are struggling to hear in noise, speech from a distance, technology (televisions) or in a room with reverberation (large conference room or gathering place). Most devices are wireless, meaning you connect your hearing aids with the devices via Bluetooth or a DM/FM signal. I have a patient who struggles to hear his wife in their kitchen where they cook often and spend time together. Often they are both moving around the room (with hard surfaces and reverberation) and not able to sit in front of each other to allow for visual cues and good speech access. The assistive device allows her to wear a microphone and her speech go into his hearing aids as if she was speaking right next to his face. It has brought them both much more delight while conversing as they do what they love.
