The response is to treat AI as a distribution and risk-control layer, not a novelty feature: build secure "bring-your-own-model" or bank-hosted copilots that keep raw statements inside a governed environment; use fine-grained permissions, redaction, and audit logs; and publish clear policies on data retention and model training. Banks should also expose high-quality, well-documented APIs with explicit consent and liability boundaries, then compete on outcomes: faster dispute resolution, better fraud detection, clearer fee transparency, and personalized guidance tied to real product actions (e.g., budget to payment scheduling). If they don't, the chat platforms will own the customer narrative and banks will compete on price and compliance alone.

The more likely scenario is that banks and Fintechs will have AI Agents and Chatbots inside their own apps and channels, where they control governance, data, permissions, and actions on a consumer account.

The ultimate objective is to have the bank serve as the primary interface for financial intelligence so that it remains the brain of financial activity, not just the muscle. Ultimately, trust is the one asset AI cannot produce. Although consumers may use public tools for convenience, they will return to institutions for the security of their data and level of sophistication in providing actionable advice.
