This data is incredibly useful and far surpasses data quality in third-party tools, even highly credible tools like Semrush or Ahrefs, because it is the actual search people typed to find you, and it's what people are searching for right now. Semrush and Ahrefs estimate keyword trends and search volumes using historical search data. I use the performance report, export the data, and manually sift through the keywords. I look for content opportunities in the form of long-tail and niche keywords, perfect for content ideation. Using keywords found in the performance report, I encourage clients to create new pages to rank for them. This is a great way to do keyword strategy for all the reasons listed above, but also because if a keyword is in your GSC, your site is actually being found for it, suggesting you already have some authority for the keyword.

You want to align your keyword targets with all of those different stages, and build hyper-focused content around those opportunities. Without dedicated landing pages that are centered around high-purchase intent keyword phrases, SEO will add little to no value to your business. And in terms of keyword research, Ahrefs blows all of the other tools out of the water. Ahrefs allows me to identify keyword opportunities that your competitors rank for by using their content gap analysis tool, which I'll then manually comb through to select keywords that are worth targeting. From there, I will create a new tab in my spreadsheet and manually list out some seed terms (2-3 words that will form the basis of most keywords we will likely want to target, like 'amazon tool' if I'm doing research for a SaaS company that provides Amazon keyword research, product research, and analytics tools). After that, I'll take those seed terms over to Ahrefs' Keyword Explorer to conduct exploratory keyword research, and I'll leverage a ton of their built-in filtering mechanisms (i.e. intent, volume, keyword difficulty, include / exclude words, etc.). Once I'm done with my exploratory keyword research, I'll combine the list with keywords identified in the content gap analysis, dedup the list, and run it through Keyword Insights to group common keywords.
