As a PA-C running Center for Men's Health in Rhode Island, I've seen how payment flexibility completely changes STI care access. We offer both insurance billing and cash self-pay options because many men avoid testing when they're worried about insurance claims showing up on family plans. The biggest game-changer we've implemented is same-day results for bacterial STIs like chlamydia and gonorrhea. While many practices make patients wait 3-7 days and return for a separate visit, we use rapid molecular testing that gives results in under 2 hours. This eliminates the anxiety of waiting and prevents patients from skipping follow-up appointments. What surprises patients most is how we bundle STI screening with other men's health services. A guy coming in for ED evaluation or testosterone testing can add comprehensive STI screening for a fraction of standalone costs. At CMH-RI, we've caught numerous asymptomatic infections this way - especially in men who wouldn't have sought STI testing independently. The most harmful misconception I encounter is men thinking they can "tell" if they have an STI based on symptoms. I've treated countless patients with completely asymptomatic chlamydia or gonorrhea who only got tested because they were already in for Low-T treatment. These infections were silently affecting their overall health and relationships.
