It's very easy to go through official PR channels of communication when contacting people, or easier still - doing a google search, which often results in being connected with people from the top of companies or who are very familiar. In reality, the varied and most realistic stories happen on the ground which means finding people to talk to in real life, looking in little known Facebook groups, approaching associations aimed at increasing the visibility of specific groups of people, and networking (they'll always be a friend of a friend that can help you out somewhere along the line).
