Many times, during Orthodontic treatment the patient's biology will respond differently than expected. If that happens the plan of action needs to be adjusted/ modified to reflect the patient's needs. This goes a long way to improve the final outcome as we need to treat each patient on their individual needs.
Amidst the challenges posed by COVID-19 restrictions, I encountered a pivotal moment in my dental practice that demanded quick thinking and decisive action. A patient undergoing intricate orthodontic treatment, with braces already in place, faced an unforeseen complication. Due to the prolonged interval between appointments, one of her premolars had been pushed excessively outward, raising concerns about compromised bone support. Aware of the urgency to address the issue, I recognized that the traditional approach of gradual adjustment via braces would prove ineffective given the time-sensitive nature of the situation. Consequently, I swiftly opted to remove the braces and swiftly transitioned to a more adaptable treatment modality. Utilizing advanced scanning technology, I crafted a custom retainer and promptly ordered aligners tailored to the patient's specific needs. This strategic pivot allowed for precise adjustments, bypassing the constraints posed by the pandemic-induced limitations on in-office visits. Ultimately, the outcome proved to be both successful and gratifying. By adapting the treatment plan to align with the evolving circumstances, we were able to preserve the integrity of the affected tooth while ensuring its continued healthy support. This experience underscored the importance of flexibility and innovation in navigating unforeseen challenges, reaffirming my commitment to delivering optimal care to my patients, even amidst the most demanding circumstances.
