Our manufacturing plant cross-trained all its employees in their duties and it not only enhanced the operational efficiency of the plant but also increased the productivity of the employees. Typically, when a machinist called in sick, the production of the plant could come to a halt. In case of emergency, the plant needs to have extra efficient employee. If a manager also knows how to operate the machines on the floor, the sudden shortage of machinery crew can be taken care of by the manager. The effect was almost instantaneous. Not only did we reduce production downtime, but employee engagement and morale also increased, as team members enjoyed the cross-training experience and discovered the challenge and novelty of helping other teams. This created a more agile and adaptable workforce, which directly translated into increased plant efficiency.
