Approaching patients with a loving and servant heart is key when having these hard conversations. I love to get to know my patients first on a personal level. Find out what they want out of their experience, and what they want for the future of their smile and health. Then, ask them permission to review what you see. Simply let them know you are here for them not only to help with their dentistry but as their advocate and friend. Always bring it back to what the patients goal is, not yours, and you'll have a loyal patient for life. Lovingly, Sara Wathen RDH
One effective approach is to involve the patient in the decision-making process regarding their dental treatment options. By discussing the pros and cons of each option and considering the patient's input, a collaborative decision can be reached. For example, I had a patient who needed to choose between a dental implant and a bridge. Instead of imposing my recommendation, I thoroughly explained each option, including the benefits, risks, and costs. I encouraged the patient to ask questions and share their concerns. We discussed their goals and preferences. Together, we weighed the pros and cons. In the end, the patient felt empowered and chose the dental implant option, understanding why it was the best solution for their specific situation. This approach ensures that the patient feels respected, valued, and actively involved in their own dental care.
When faced with a difficult conversation about dental treatment options, it can be effective to involve the patient's support network. This involves including a trusted family member or friend in the conversation to provide emotional support and an additional perspective. By doing so, the patient feels more supported and understood, and it also shows that their concerns and preferences are being taken seriously. For example, if a patient is hesitant about a complex dental procedure, involving their spouse in the conversation can help address any fears or doubts they may have. The spouse can also offer insights into the patient's personal preferences and help weigh the pros and cons of different treatment options. This approach recognizes the importance of a patient's support network and their influence on decision-making, ultimately leading to a more collaborative and satisfactory outcome.
In difficult conversations regarding dental treatment options, sharing patient testimonials can be effective. By showcasing success stories of patients who have undergone similar treatments, hesitant patients can find reassurance and build trust. For example, I once had a patient who was afraid of getting dental implants due to fear of pain and uncertainty about the outcome. I shared testimonials from other patients who had gone through the same procedure with positive results. Hearing their experiences and seeing their improved oral health helped alleviate the patient's concerns and increased their confidence in the treatment option. Patient testimonials can provide a powerful tool to address doubts and demonstrate the potential benefits of recommended dental treatments.
