In the demanding landscape of adtech, where we handle a relentless influx of 500,000 queries per second (QPS) daily, processing and storing this data in near real-time for crucial business decisions presents a formidable challenge. Initially, we grappled with resource-intensive data fetching, utilizing a configuration of 20 executors, each boasting 8 cores and 8GB of RAM. Recognizing the strain on resources, we embarked on a comprehensive analysis of our pipeline, leading to optimization measures that drastically enhanced efficiency. Through strategic adjustments, we transformed our setup to utilize 20 executors with reduced specifications of 2 cores and 4GB of RAM each. Remarkably, this optimization not only met our processing needs but also enabled us to handle three times the data volume as before, ensuring our ability to make timely and informed decisions in the dynamic adtech industry.
In our analytics department, we were struggling with slow data retrieval affecting our productivity. Instead of burying our heads in sand, we turned it into an opportunity to reinvent our big data solution. We implemented data tiering, placing frequently used data into faster, accessible storage. Additionally, we optimized our data algorithms, cutting through any unnecessary complexity. As a result, our data retrieval rate increased by an astonishing 40%, considerably boosting productivity and overall company agility. It was an eloquent solution that cost us nothing except our unwavering commitment to improvement.
We started putting more focus on public sentiment which is a generalized analysis of data gathered from overall engagement data statistics. Seeing which features or resources get the most feedback (positive and negative) allows us to steer towards a better direction when it comes to our next software updates. This also comes into play when we think of user interface and design, of how we market our brand in terms of being informative, credible, and most importantly, factual, and how we shape our direction as a business entity. This helped us improve and streamline our processes better based on audience demand, help our feedback processes to be faster since we already have a general view of what does and doesn't work, and allow our customers to feel involved in our overall approach.
As part of a big-data project one time, I reduced the time it took to process our data by several orders of magnitude simply by changing the algorithms and beefing up our hardware for the process. Whereas it used to take hours, now the operation took minutes. The result was significant increases in productivity and quicker decision-making for our team. It was a manifest example of why it’s important to continually improve and adjust in the tech world.
