A patient's perceived pain level in a given condition can be exacerbated if their physiology in general is inflammatory due to lifestyle choices. Likewise, the inflammatory process involves tissue breakdown in preparation for subsequent cell repair and replacement, but that healing process remains stuck in an unending tissue breakdown in the inflamed body of a person. A person can remain in pain and their condition can continue to get progressively worse until an intervention beyond acute pharmaceutical use is brought into the care plan. We had a recent case of a male patient in his 40s with chronic lower back pain but also a very pro-inflammatory diet. With nutritional counselling to replace certain staples of his diet with anti-inflammatory choices, as well as supplementation with Omega-3 fatty acids, not only did we achieve a more substantial and sustained decrease in pain levels, his physical appearance was less red and puffy, and he reported simply feeling better.
