A polyphenol in green coffee beans, chlorogenic acid has been researched for its potential support of metabolic health and weight loss. Research evidence indicates that CGA may regulate body fat levels through various mechanisms, including glucose metabolism control as well as reduced lipid uptake from food into storage depots such as adipose tissues. Trials have found an association between chlorogenic acid supplementation and significant body weight, BMI, and waist circumference reduction versus placebo groups. The likely reason for these results is that chlorogenic acids inhibit the enzyme glucose-6-phosphatase, which is responsible for sugar production by the liver. This enhances insulin sensitivity and decreases fat deposition. One of the most attractive aspects about chlorogenic acid is its potential to raise metabolism while preventing overeating. CGA has been shown to activate AMP-activated protein kinase, a certain enzyme that manages the body's energy supply and promotes burning fat. A 2018 study is a case in point: people who took chlorogenic acid supplements lost more visceral fat as well ate less, due largely to effects on appetite-regulating hormones like ghrelin or leptin that signal hunger and satiety. Nonetheless, while the results look promising, CGA supplementation must be approached with cautious optimism. Not all studies are consistent, and its effect on weight management varies by dosage, formulation, and individual physiological differences. For example, a 2019 randomized controlled trial in Obesity Science & Practice determined that while CGA supplementation produced a small change in body weight, the difference from the placebo group was not significant when combined with a typical diet. This points up how important it is to use chlorogenic acid with a plan that incorporates caloric restriction, exercise, and behavioral modifications for overweight people--in other words, as part of an overall weight loss program. I speak from clinical experience in say that I generally prescribe chlorogenic acid supplements as an adjunct to lifestyle changes. For patients who are having trouble with food cravings or metabolic issues, CGA can be a useful tool--but it alone is hardly a panacea. I often stress the need to buy high-quality products from reputable manufacturers since so much crap is out there; potency and pureness differ widely.
