The most common refractive error I see in pediatric patients is myopia, especially in kids around 8 to 12. What's striking is how quickly it can progress if not caught early, sometimes increasing by over -1.00 diopter per year. One tip that's worked well in my practice is introducing outdoor play as a "prescription." I tell parents to aim for at least 90 minutes of natural daylight exposure daily. It sounds simple, but studies (and my patient outcomes) consistently show it slows myopia progression. I also combine this with low-dose atropine drops for high-risk cases. It's about catching the condition early and using small lifestyle shifts before it turns into something more complex in their teens.
