At Indiana University (IU) and the School of Medicine, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) has been integrated into the campus culture of students, residents, fellows, and faculty through a multifaceted supplier approach. DEI integration is accomplished through organizing educational workshops to promote academic excellence with inclusivity, encouraging research and quality improvement for education and health equity outcomes in medicine, and designing promotion and tenure opportunities for faculty associated with DEI initiatives. DEI workshops are department wide lectureships bringing cutting edge speakers and their research to spread awareness and identify and bridge gaps in care and education for patients and students who are underserved. Faculty are obligated to teach and provide patient care in accord with our inclusive mission, promoting equitable education and outcomes for all we serve. As an academic center, there is encouragement to perform DEI research, quantifying gaps in care and education at our center through curious inquiry. After gaps are quantified, quality improvement initiatives aimed at closing those gaps are performed with success being determined by post intervention data to validate the effect of the quality improvement interventions. Lastly, the promotion and tenure committee at the university considers DEI initiatives and dissemination of DEI works as part of faculty development and promotion. I can highly recommend this extensive approach for incorporating DEI principles and developing a competitive diversity supplier program that welcomes all.
