Becoming a manager of people landed fairly early in my career, when I was least expecting this opportunity. While excited, I lacked people management experience, so it was also daunting, as now, not only was I accountable for my own decisions and outputs, but a team too, across a few departments. I was extremely fortunate to work for, and report to an incredible CEO, a highly accomplished entrepreneur and successful business leader who believed in me and invested time in mentoring me, as a young manager. I was challenged (which at times placed me in a place of discomfort), but also supported. He provided the opportunity to learn from experiences, be open to receive feedback, and gain confidence to hold difficult conversations. While I learnt many things as a mentee, one key take away was it is sometimes necessary to step out of your comfort zone, be uncomfortable to achieve growth.
One experience that positively influenced me was when I was paired with a mentor who emphasized the importance of company loyalty. They taught me the significance of fostering loyalty within the workplace but also provided practical guidance on how to achieve it. Through their mentorship, I learned how to promote a supportive and inclusive culture, recognize and appreciate employee contributions, and create opportunities for growth and development. Witnessing the dedication and effort put into creating a workplace where individuals feel heard and have the opportunity to advance shifted my own attitude towards my mentor and the organization I was working for. It made me realize the value of loyalty and the impact it can have on employee satisfaction and overall success.

Mentorship is essential at all points in a person's career. Many people may the mistake of thinking only someone new in their career may use a mentor. I have been lucky to work with mentors early in my career, and they continue to provide me with fresh perspectives to this day. The best experience was when my mentor truly knew my personality, career aspirations and, offered a safe space when we met and another touch point for career feedback. Empathy in mentorship is extremely important. Mentorship is its own rewarding experience and provides mentors with the opportunity to hone their leadership and empathy skills but the person being mentored knows they have someone in their court who truly wants them to succeed.
Shortly after West Coast management convinced me to move cross-country to take on a big promotion with a big raise, I suffered from imposter syndrome. Luckily, my new manager saw my potential and eagerly jumped into the role of mentor. One example: He researched and approved extended learning classes for me to attend when I expressed anxiety over a desire to improve my skills to do my job more effectively. Overall, he took me under his wing to share how he had overcome his challenges when he first became an executive. This included the invaluable advice of thinking about a solution whenever you bring a problem to your boss. Embracing his passion for lifelong learning, critical thinking, perseverance, and patience has greatly helped me regarding promotions and compensation at subsequent companies, including my current position at a digital media company in the insurance industry.
While some of my mentors laid the foundation, the thing that really helped me to grow, both as a person and in my career, was becoming a mentor myself. I've always had a knack for social media marketing, and I quickly fell into the niche of being a great solo manager of accounts. I had a great feel for what kind of content would take off, I was good at being creative within the company style, and I worked quickly. What I didn't do much of was working with others. I finally--at the prompting of my long-time mentor and former college professor--applied for a leadership position and suddenly found myself in charge of four social media interns. Learning to work with them, to guide them without doing their job for them, and to correct them without crushing them when they made mistakes, was really hard for me, but it made me into the manager I am today.
