Being of Filipino heritage, I know first hand how cultural values, beliefs and rituals are factors to be considered when people participate in therapy and engage in their therapeutic relationships, so I know the importance of being sensitive and respectful of the diverse cultural backgrounds of others. My approach is to always actively listen to my clients and remind myself to do it without judgment and separate my own biases and beliefs. As I learn about their cultural contexts, I incorporate this into their treatment plans. For example, I’ve worked with many clients who value the presence of their family members in therapy sessions and wish for them to stay during the assessment or treatment. As well, the opinions of family members are very important to the client therefore I will include family members in the conversation when appropriate. If it’s what the client wants and it is beneficial to their progress, recovery and quality of life, then I will always do my best to incorporate their wishes.
Cultural sensitivity is vital in occupational therapy and business development to create inclusive environments that cater to diverse needs. In occupational therapy, it involves understanding patients' cultural backgrounds to deliver personalized care. Similarly, in business, it enhances marketing strategies and partner relations. Effective approaches include assessing cultural backgrounds before creating treatment plans and adapting strategies to engage clients respectfully and inclusively.
