Raw data requires custom implementations to pre-process and filter the input and then more custom implementations to go from raw data to information and actionable insights. This is becoming less of an obstacle today since the availability of AI assistance is at a point where it can suggest a course of action and then execute it by itself, alleviating a lot of the grunt work needed for this task. The biggest challenge that we face as a team is that capable LLMs still cost a lot to use, but if the approach is to get from raw data to the information stage with deterministic tooling (that AI can provide), the amount of tokens needed to get the insights is greatly reduced by factors of 10x-1000x. We are considering self-hosting models locally in our datacenters to reduce long term operating cost. The downside of this approach is that we need to maintain this infrastructure and it requires a high initial investment that can pay for itself rather quickly (6-18 months). That also will limit the available ML models to those that are open-weight and usually not state of the art.
