Designing outdoor spaces for hospitality venues, such as patios and pool areas, requires a balance of aesthetic appeal and functional use. I start by understanding the site's unique characteristics, including its location, climate, and the overall theme of the establishment. For instance, when designing the wave pool on the podium deck above the Galaxy Casino and Hotel Resorts in Macau, I aimed to create an inviting and vibrant atmosphere that would attract both guests and gamblers. The design features outdoor dining terraces for three distinct restaurants, allowing visitors to enjoy culinary experiences with stunning views of the wave pool. Additionally, the integration of a combined sand and beach area enhances the beach resort vibe, offering guests a chance to unwind and relax. The layout accommodates a seamless flow between the pool area and dining spaces, encouraging guests to linger and savor their experience. To ensure functionality, I carefully considered elements such as shaded seating, adequate sun loungers, and pathways that promote easy movement. The result is a lively outdoor space that maximizes appeal, encourages social interaction, and enhances the overall guest experience. This successful design not only elevates the atmosphere of the resort but also provides a memorable setting for dining and recreation.
When designing outdoor spaces for hospitality, such as patios or pool areas, my primary focus is on creating an environment that blends comfort, aesthetics, and functionality. The goal is to make the space not only visually appealing but also conducive to relaxation and social interaction. I always take into account the specific needs of the space, the flow of movement, and how each piece of furniture or feature will contribute to the overall experience. I start by considering the layout and ensuring there's a natural flow between different areas-whether it's a dining area, a lounge space, or a poolside retreat. I look for ways to incorporate versatile furniture like modular seating and weather-resistant pieces that are both stylish and functional. Hot tubs, saunas, or BBQs can also play a pivotal role in elevating the atmosphere, giving guests opportunities to relax and unwind. A specific example of a successful outdoor space I designed was for a boutique hotel with a small but luxurious pool area. The challenge was to make the space feel expansive and inviting, despite its compact size. I focused on creating distinct zones for different activities, such as a lounging area with oversized outdoor furniture, a BBQ corner with a high-end grill for gatherings, and a hot tub strategically placed for privacy and tranquility. To enhance the sense of space, I used a mix of lush greenery, modern lighting, and decorative elements like sculptures and fountains. The key to the success of this design was its balance of style and functionality. Guests could enjoy a relaxing day by the pool, cook and dine in comfort, or unwind in the hot tub-all in a seamless, cohesive outdoor setting. This space became one of the most popular spots in the hotel, elevating the overall guest experience while maximizing the use of the available area. In essence, the approach is about thoughtful planning and selecting the right products that not only complement the space but also contribute to creating an immersive, luxurious experience. Every detail should reflect both form and function.
