Colic in babies is caused by a combination of digestive immaturity and sensitivity to stimuli, but we don't fully understand what causes it. In my practice I've noticed that babies with colic cry for at least 3 hours a day, several days a week and it usually starts in the evening. This is different from normal fussiness which is shorter and more easily soothed. Treatment is supportive care - gentle rocking, tummy massages and calming techniques - not medication unless there's an underlying medical condition. For parents it's exhausting so I always stress the importance of self care and seeking support. Taking turns with a partner, using white noise or short breaks can make a big difference. Knowing that colic is temporary and not your fault is key to managing stress during these crazy weeks.
