Families with crazy schedules need cleaning solutions that work fast. I've found essential oil-based cleaners get the job done without harsh chemicals. At Jacksonville Maids, we tell clients to use refillable spray bottles and microfiber cloths - you'll save money and create less trash. Getting kids to help with simple chores and keeping a weekly schedule makes an environmentally conscious home possible even when you're swamped.
Eco-friendly cleaning is only really possible when you're a busy mom if it's systemized, not idealized. The greatest misconception is that 'green' equals more time, more product or less than good results. In fact, when executed properly, it's the exact opposite. A simple triumvirate of plant-based dish soap, white vinegar and baking soda eliminates 80% of cleaning needs in the home. For example, a dish soap diluted with water is better at cutting grease than many commercially available all-purpose sprays; and vinegar should be used as a secondary disinfectant after cleaning surfaces, not as the primary one. That sequencing error is remarkably widespread. It's the rituals that matter not the ingredients. I recommend a 'reset clean' mentality 10-15 minutes daily within high-touch areas, kitchen counters, sinks, toilet seats, and floors where kids are playing. It prevents buildup so that deeper, chemical-laden cleaning is not required later on. Microfiber cloths are yet another underplayed eco tool, as they reduce product use significantly and work better than paper towels. Far too many eco products are maligned because they get over-applied. Green cleaners work through a mechanical process never chemical. Spray on slightly, let it rest for up to 60 seconds, and then wipe. They are safer for kids and pets in the room, and are faster if applied correctly.
