To help clients stay motivated and accountable, it's important to ensure the daily and weekly goals are small and easily achievable. You don't want to overwhelm clients straight off the bat. My favorite strategy is habit stacking. This involves attaching a new habit to a current one. For example, if daily meditation is a new habit you're trying to incorporate into your day, before you open your computer (the trigger), spend 5 to 10 minutes meditating (new habit). Another option is before you take that first sip of coffee in the morning (the trigger), take 3 deep breathes to be more mindful (habit).
It's easy to cheat on wellness goals because, for many, they seem theoretical when compared to our educational, career, and financial objectives. The logic appears selfless and sound. We sacrifice ourselves to secure a more prosperous tomorrow. A good coach will expose the fault in such thinking by helping the client see that today's energy fuels tomorrow's success. However, knowledge alone is not enough to change behavior. For that, people need a "because". Great coaches help clients realize that wellness goals aren't selfish. They encourage clients to name a beneficiary of their efforts. Whether it's a child, spouse, friend, or community, having a WHY - a reason for your efforts, will underscore accountability and spark consistent motivation. Let's face it. Left to one's own devices, we may not raise for that run at 5 am. But being healthy enough to keep up with the kid's soccer team, well, those smiles can put a spring in your step.
