One of the most successful strategies we've implemented to increase healthy snack adoption in workplace vending programs was introducing better-for-you products that have a longer shelf life while still feeling convenient and satisfying. The biggest shift came when we moved away from short-dated "health foods" and instead stocked clean-ingredient, shelf-stable options that employees already recognize and trust. Adding items like grass-fed meat sticks, individually wrapped cheese sticks, protein bars with simple ingredients, peanuts, and dried fruit made a noticeable difference. These snacks feel familiar, are easy to grab, and don't come with the perception of being bland or overly "diet-focused." The specific change that drove the largest improvement in purchasing behavior was placing these healthier, longer-lasting snacks at eye level and integrating them alongside traditional options, rather than separating them into a "healthy" section. This normalized healthier choices and reduced hesitation. Employees didn't feel like they were sacrificing taste or convenience, and because the products stayed fresh longer, they were consistently available and well stocked. As a result, healthier items began selling more consistently, repeat purchases increased, and employees naturally shifted toward snacks that better supported their energy and wellness throughout the workday—without feeling forced or restricted.
