There are three primary tools we use for building sites, optimizing for conversions, and performing SEO work. Those three tools are as follows: Screaming Frog - This tool will crawl an entire website to display all of the pages of a website in a table. We find this tool incredibly helpful for both SEO and site redesigns. For redesigns, it helps us take an inventory of the existing site content so that we can make sure none of the pages are lost in a migration. We may also use the list of pages/posts to re-organize the site hierarchy. For SEO, this tool helps us ensure every page has only one H1 tag and some H2 tags. We can see all of the H1s and meta titles to see if anything could be changed or improved. We can also make sure that there are no 404 errors or pages that are incorrectly crawlable or uncrawlable. Ahrefs - This tool is a powerhouse for SEO work. We've used many competing tools like SEMRush and Moz. Ahrefs is by far the best at crawling and finding backlinks. We track links we've earned for clients and our keyword rankings with the tool. We also analyze competitor websites to find backlink opportunities and page or post topics that we may be able to incorporate into our own strategy. Hotjar - Hotjar is our go-to conversion optimization tool. It will create user heatmaps, and record live sessions of users. We can view the heatmaps and watch the recordings to see how users are interacting with the site. This helps us find opportunities for improvement and fix site errors to improve conversions.

SEMrush is a comprehensive SEO and digital marketing tool. It quickly evaluates the strength of a site in terms of rankings and traffic. Its most useful tools I find are keyword research, competitor analysis, site audits, and backlink tracking. It's essential for improving search engine rankings and online visibility in my experience. Canva for a non-design guy like me provides a user-friendly design tool for creating visually appealing graphics, social media posts, presentations, and marketing materials without needing advanced design skills. Moz is where I gravitated after using Web CEO. It brings a suite of valuable SEO tools and resources, including site audits, rank tracking, and keyword research. For SEO, I find Semrush incredibly helpful. It offers a wide range of tools for keyword research, SEO audits and content creation that other tools, with the exception of Ahrefs, simply can't compete with. Semrush also offers a free certified SEO course giving a solid foundation on the topic. For example, you can specify a page on your website and one or two keywords. Semrush will then compare your page to your top ten competitors and tell you what they're doing differently, giving you detailed feedback on content length, semantic keywords, Metatags, etc. For link building, I recommend Pitchbox, which is a great all-in-one tool to find high authority websites, identify the best contact person and run an AI driven outreach campaign. We've had a higher success rate using Pitchbox than with other similar link building tools.

As an SEO and analytics professional I use a whole range of tools like Ahrefs, SEMRush, Sitebulb, Screaming Frog etc. Two other which I think are under-rated and under-used are Google Search Console (GSC) and Looker Studio. GSC can give us a huge amount of insights about organic Google Search - not just from traffic but also indexation and technical issues. And it's free! Secondly (and also free) is Looker Studio. This is great for visualising data and 'translating' data into insights for clients. It's powerful if you want to combine data sources (for example GSC and Google Analytics 4). Building a bespoke Looker dashboard for marketing clients is a great win. It gives them data and insights in a way that's understandable for them and empowers them by helping them see opportunities and insights.

There are two tools that I find helpful for my day-to-day work - Instantly.ai and ahrefs. My most preferred Instantly features are as survey creation (including customizable templates), real-time analytics (access to survey responses) as well as advanced targeting options.
