The stress involved in the management of crops during severe weather change remains a significant challenge to farmers and many agriculturalists. As a technique that helps me achieve success, I’ve found it helpful to shift to methods such as precision irrigation practices, which help manage water use and minimize the effects of drought or flood. Precision irrigation makes use of innovative technology in order to provide water only in the right place and time condition because of the real-time data obtained and crop’s requirement. This technique reduces loss of water and thus guarantees an optimal level of moisture to crops even when weather conditions are unfavourable. Soil moisture sensors is one of precision irrigation’s critical elements. These sensors are installed in selected locations of the field which are used for measuring the soil moisture content. Monitoring the soil moisture content ensures farmers to only irrigate when necessary and the right amount of water is applied to avoid over-irrigation, which can cause crop diseases and underwatering that leads to poor yield. This method of watering also involves the delivery of water directly to the roots of plants through a system of pipes and emitters which help to minimize evaporation, runoff and free growth. Through drip irrigation, the crops are given almost a constant supply of water, even if there is lack of available water or drought season. This contributes to maintaining the subsistence of healthy crops. In addition, using the weather forecasting data for irrigation management gives farmers a heads-up that comes in handy to prepare early enough when there is likely to be an extreme weather event for irrigation adjustments.
