The workers in the fast food industry deserve decent wages like every other worker, and there are several reasons why they should be paid more. A major aspect is the type of work that requires a lot of multitasking and often includes highly stressful situations and physical labor. 1. Demanding Work Environment: Their work environment is characterized by speed and pressure. The employees usually have to perform several functions at the same time, from taking orders and managing cash registers to preparing meals and maintaining hygiene. The level of workload typically results in physical as well as mental exhaustion. Raising their salary is a step towards acknowledging the difficult nature of their jobs and rewarding them accordingly for the work. 2. Essential Workers Amidst Challenges: Highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, fast food workers became frontline workers. They remained active in the community, adjusted to new safety measures and dealt with more hazardous health conditions. Regardless of the challenges, most workers in the fast food industry did not receive adequate payment for the additional work and risks they undertook during this period. Personal Anecdote: A personal example goes further to highlight the importance of just payment. One of the most interesting interviews I had was with a fast food worker who gave me an insight into what it is like to work both front and back operations during peak hours. In spite of their commitment and effort, the worker presented an economic problem which was a contrast between the tedious nature of this job and payment got. So in addition to showing respect for fast food workers, paying them more also reflects on their physical and mental health. Fair compensation is not only a moral issue but also an important step towards providing fast food workers with an environment that appreciates their efforts and honors them.
