As a parent and as someone who has worked with families for so long, I'm constantly looking for ways that I can make playsets something more than just an area where children can simply run around. Texture and sensory inputs have a vast role in how children interact with the world and grow. One of my favorite things to incorporate is textured surfaces. Whether rough stone walls, smooth wooden boards, or soft rubber matting, these textures give children the freedom to dig their hands and feet into them, and through this, they develop tactile awareness. Easy materials can have a major impact on the way a child interacts with the world around them. Water features are another wonderful sensory feature. Including a miniature fountain or water play area is not only guaranteed to draw children's attention but also invites them to play with flow, splash, and movement. The sound stimulus of flowing water along with the potential of being able to touch it presents a sensory experience involving their sense of hearing and sense of touch. It's a wonderful way to cool off, but it's also an enormous incentive to learn by discovery. When you combine these sensory-rich pieces, you have a playset that not only entertains. It encourages kids to grow and develop in positive ways.
