The EU AI Act's arrival isn't a distant event, it's rapidly approaching. As a Software Developer at a major European fintech, we've been navigating PSD2, GDPR, and DORA for years, shaping our architecture accordingly. But the AI Act presents a fundamentally different challenge - it regulates not just data, but the logic within our AI systems. Legal teams are crucial, of course, but the engineering groundwork needs to start as soon as possible. As developers, we need to approach this with the same rigor we apply to dependency management. Metadata tagging needs to be integrated directly into our CI/CD pipelines. Every model commit should trigger a requirement for essential metadata: the intended use case, data lineage (what data is it touching?), impact on critical factors like creditworthiness, and versioning details. This metadata should automatically populate a central, searchable registry. Financial services AI is presumptively high-risk under Annex III of the Act, triggering the full compliance burden including risk management systems, data governance, documentation, transparency, human oversight, and accuracy standards. Fines can reach €35 million or 7% (!) of global turnover. Skipping this leaves you scrambling for documentation and audits later, stalling features like real-time risk scoring. Early inventory aligns with "compliance by design," turning regulatory hurdles into scalable, trustworthy AI - key for customer trust in our sector. In our team, this step revealed shadow AI in third-party libs, prompting swift fixes; do it now to front-load effort and innovate confidently.
I think the single most important step fintechs should take right now is to build a living map of every AI system they use and clearly mark which ones are "high-risk" under the EU AI Act (credit scoring, fraud, KYC, underwriting, robo-advice, etc.). From there, I'd assign an owner for each high-risk system and start treating it like a regulated product: document what data it uses, how it was built, how it's monitored, and exactly how humans oversee it. If that groundwork isn't solid, no amount of last-minute policy writing will save you in August 2026.
