I'm based in Denver, and one of my favorite free activities is exploring the Cherry Creek Trail. It's a scenic, multi-use path that stretches for miles, perfect for solo walks, family outings, or even taking the dog along. What makes it special is its accessibility—right in the heart of the city, yet it feels like a peaceful retreat. I love starting at the Denver Botanic Gardens, where the trail begins, and working my way up to Cherry Creek Reservoir. The trail offers great views, wildlife, and a chance to escape the hustle and bustle without incurring any costs. The best time to visit is early mornings or late afternoons during weekdays, when it's less crowded. Rising costs have shifted my approach to entertainment. I've started seeking out more local spots like this, finding joy in the outdoors rather than expensive events or activities. It's a great way to enjoy the city without breaking the bank.
I'm a Las Vegas local and while most people associate the city with gambling and entertainment, there are actually loads of interesting things here that don't have to be paid for. My favorite free activity is definitely going to see the Seven Magic Mountains, the neon boulders stacked in the middle of the desert that's only 30 minutes driving from the Strip. An ideal activity for those traveling solo, those traveling as a pair, and even those who want to bring their families and pets. It'd be perfect to go at sunrise or during golden hour: less people, and the colors really stand out against the desert sky. Closer to town is the Bellagio Conservatory which is free as well. Locals know that visiting early in the morning is the best way to avoid the crowd. Besides this, if you love to hike, there are some trails at Red Rock Canyon that aren't official and are outside the fee area, and these are really good for short nature getaways. With rising prices, my husband and I prefer to plan weekend outings to spots like Mt. Charleston or stroll the Downtown Arts District during First Friday events. We don't really need to spend much to feel like we've gotten away anyway. Exploring your own city with a traveler's mindset can be surprisingly satisfying and way easier on the wallet.
