A question I frequently pose during GA4 interviews is: 'Describe a situation in which you actually used GA4 data to make a decision - what was the change, and what was the impact?' This question might seem straightforward, but it still determines who can simply navigate a dashboard and those who actually know how to use analytics for success. Most prominently, the signal turns negative when a candidate describes at length the process of event and conversion setup without being able to explain the business significance of those numbers. GA4 is a strong tool, but if you cannot tell a story out of the data, you are not going to be a significant contributor to the strategy. According to me, the genuine difference lies in this: Those who are focused on setup refer to tagging, configuration, and 'getting the data in'. The other ones talk about user behavior, funnel friction, attribution shifts, and what they would test next. Attribution understanding is undoubtedly the skill most exaggerated in interviews. Everyone says they 'know GA4 attribution,' but only a few can articulate the differences between models or how those shifts impact campaign decisions. This is the turning point where the real experts differentiate themselves.
Here's my go-to question: "Tell me about a time a GA4 insight led to an actual product change." It tells me more than anything if a person just looks at reports or really moves the needle. One candidate I interviewed redesigned the checkout flow based on funnel data and conversions climbed. If they can't connect analysis to action, I ask them to describe a specific project they've done. That's what matters.
When I interview marketers, I ask for a specific example of using GA4 data to change something. A lot of people just say they "increased conversions." I want to hear details like, "We saw people dropping off at checkout, so we added PayPal." That shows they actually worked with the data, not just talked about it.
We see a red flag pretty quickly. A candidate can detail how they set up reports, but when you ask what changed because of that data, they get stuck. Then I ask them which three metrics matter most for diagnosing what's happening. Technicians get stuck trying to describe where to click in the interface. Analysts start telling a story, layering context, and questioning the data before trusting it. You learn in thirty seconds who can guide strategy and who is just there to install tags.
