The book I most recommend is "Fiber Fueled" by Dr. Will Bulsiewicz. This groundbreaking work delves deeply into the gut microbiome, illuminating its critical role in overall health and how it can be optimized through a plant-based diet. The principles laid out in "Fiber Fueled" challenge the prevailing trends of restrictive fad diets like keto and paleo, which often overlook the foundational importance of dietary fiber. Instead, Dr. Bulsiewicz’s research underscores that real, sustainable health stems from nurturing our gut microbiome with a diversity of plant-based foods. A fiber-fueled diet supports digestion, enhances immune function, reduces inflammation, and may even impact mental health through the gut-brain axis. "Fiber Fueled" showed me that true health comes from paying attention to what our bodies naturally need instead of just reaching for quick fixes pushed by big pharma. While drugs like Ozempic have their place for weight-related conditions like diabetes, they often overshadow the more accessible and genuinely transformative power of a healthy diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and mindfulness practices like meditation. In an era where quick fixes are often sought after, "Fiber Fueled" provides a compelling case for the long-term benefits of a fiber-rich, plant-based diet. It’s a message that may not generate the revenue of pharmaceuticals but one that holds the key to genuine health improvements, spreading slowly and organically as more people discover its benefits.
The Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg. This book dives deep into the science of how habits are formed, maintained, and changed, which is foundational to both personal wellness and guiding others toward healthier lifestyles. What makes it especially relevant is its clear explanation of how small behavioral changes can lead to significant improvements in overall well-being. It profoundly influenced my approach to wellness by shifting my focus from simply achieving short-term goals to understanding the underlying habits that drive long-term success. The concept of the “habit loop”—cue, routine, and reward—has become central to how I design wellness programs and advise clients. Rather than focusing solely on willpower or motivation, I help individuals rewire their habits, allowing them to sustain healthier behaviors without constant struggle. This book reinforces the idea that wellness is not just about quick fixes but about creating sustainable routines that align with personal health goals. It has provided me with a deeper understanding of the psychology behind wellness, making my approach more strategic and ultimately more effective in creating lasting change.
I highly recommend Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life to colleagues in the health and wellness field. This book has profoundly influenced my approach to wellness by emphasizing the importance of finding balance and purpose in life. The concept of "Ikigai," which is about discovering one's reason for being, resonates deeply with the holistic approach I advocate in wellness. It has inspired me to focus not just on physical health, but also on the emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of well-being. By integrating the principles of Ikigai, I've been able to help others cultivate a more fulfilling and balanced lifestyle, which ultimately contributes to long-term happiness and health.
"The Mountain Is You" by Brianna Wiest. This book beautifully emphasizes the power of positive thinking and self-reflection. By nurturing positivity and self-awareness, we’re not only transforming our mindset but also revolutionizing how we care for ourselves inside and out.
"The Wellness Approach: The Secrets to Health Your Doctor is Afraid to Tell You" I wrote this book to teach the 5 factors to health that are often overlooked in our "sick care" model of health. It's an easy read and filled with a light hearted style which is easy to digest and gain powerful health insight to your life. I even talk about the story where my dad was considered "the fountain of youth" when his doctor took him off all his medications after many years of poor health.
A Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl A man's search for meaning offers an incredible perspective on what it takes for someone to make it through difficult times. It has influenced my approach to wellness by changing my mindset on the importance of motivation and optimism. Motivation and optimism are neat tools to get started and create ideas but will not offer you what you need to make it through the hard work. Creating habits and a mindset with a vision on your long term goals is what drives us toward wellness. They provide what a person needs to make lasting change. This shift in my coaching has led to focusing on long term change instead of short term results when it comes to health and wellness.
