By serving the salad in a jar, it creates a visually appealing and portable option for a classic dish that is typically served on a plate. This simple twist can also make the dish more convenient for on-the-go meals or picnics. For the revamped version, include toppings like crispy bacon, boiled egg, or grilled chicken and add a homemade salad dressing such as a lemon-garlic vinaigrette or a creamy parmesan dressing to create a unique flavor profile.
Once upon a time, I had a vegan roommate. I used to do most of the cooking for our apartment, and I perfected a pretty mean vegan mac and cheese recipe that even non-vegetarians enjoyed. Rather than build up from plant-based cooking tactics like using nutritional yeast or blended vegetables, I simply adapted my regular mac and cheese recipe with vegan substitutions. I started with a roux, swapping out butter for vegan spread and milk for nut milk, adding flour, then gradually melting Daiya cheese into the mix. When blended properly, I added cooked pasta. Then, to take it up a notch I added a rotation of different decadent toppings like french friend onions and sriracha or black beans and taco seasoning. While perhaps not the healthiest, it is extremely tasty and a great way to accommodate vegans alongside omnivores without having to make separate dishes.

The key ingredient to making a classic recipe all your own is the spices. Adding extra ingredients simply makes the dish, well, extra. Spice is the portal to truly changing the taste of something. One great example of this is the hamburger. Hamburgers need a little spice to get their flavor, otherwise they are flat meatballs. By adding a little garam masala and curry powder for example, the meat takes on a whole new flavor, creating a mouth-wateringly spicy masala burger.
There is a reason a classic dish is a classic dish. Look for the pairing or contrast of distinctive flavors or in the case of the dish below, the contrast of flavors and colors. Work off of that distinction and create while being true to the original. In recreating Mango Lime Salsa, I loved the contrast of flavor, the sweetness of Mango, the acidity of onion, and a bit of pepper. Additionally, the traditionally used red onion provides a vivid color contrast. But I always thought the red onion did not meld well. So I replaced the red onion with sweet onion that does a betterjob of melding. I then used three peppers to replace the kick. Red bell pepper to replace the visual kick. And poblano and jalapeno to replace the flavor kick. The result is tastier and true to the original.
Turning a classic dish into a small bite or appetizer can provide a unique twist on a classic recipe. For instance, lasagna bites can replace a full-sized lasagna, and make it more interesting as an appetizer. Cutting the lasagna into small squares and presenting it in unique ways can enhance the visual appeal and provide a new experience for the guest. The ingredient composition will remain familiar, but the presentation and the experience will be completely different.
While the classic lasagna is legendary by all means, my personal favorite is a sweet and sour pork lasagna. I've made quite a few ingredient substitutions, such as swapping ground beef for pork, using Cheddar cheese instead of ricotta, and incorporating heavy cream and sweet and sour sauce in lieu of marinara. This variation results in a delightfully creamy and cheesy lasagna that has become a staple at our family gatherings. This dish is appealing to both fans of lasagna and those who enjoy sweet and sour flavors.
The best way to put a unique twist on a classic recipe to make it your own is to swap one of the the recipe ingredients for something with an unexpected yet complimentary flavor to your dish. Sloppy joes are such a classic meal. They're relatively inexpensive to make and super easy to prepare which is why mom's have been serving them for dinner for ages. I've got a great a new twist on this traditional dinnertime staple. Swap out half of the ground beef in your favorite sloppy joe recipe for sweet Italian sausage. The sweetness of the pork and the hint of fennel seasoning will take your sloppy joe dinner to a whole new level.
