For example, in running, We can track variables such as Heart rate, Pace, Cadence, Power, and Lactate levels to different degrees. Collecting the data is important, but the analytical part is essential in deciding how to use the data and how to optimize the training. For example, a runner may feel they have reached a plateau in their training; however, when we review their heart rate data, it may be clear that all of their runs are at the same intensity level, therefore adding some variation in their training plan, for example, easier lower heart rate based runs, and some interval training at higher intensities can be structured in a way to increase an athletes fitness levels gradually. Similarly, we could track and analyze athletes' cadence if they have suffered recently from injuries. Multiple factors can cause injuries, but sometimes overstriding can be a contributing factor. Gradually increasing running cadence (steps) helps improve efficiency and reduce impact injuries as, particularly for beginners, this helps minimize overstriding. Some of the data collection and analysis previously done predominantly in the labs, like lactate testing, is becoming more common now in professional running groups during training sessions, with lactate testing kits providing valuable data so that the training session can be structured and intensity managed during the session to optimize results.
