We have a set of company-wide status options that everyone uses, and it allows staff to clearly indicate when they are available, out of the office, at home, or on leave. The most useful status, though, is the one to indicate focus time, which people use when they are in the office but can’t be interrupted, and we encourage people to use this regularly to avoid being distracted. Setting some clear guidelines has been really effective, and people no longer expect instant responses but are happy using Slack as an asynchronous way of communicating with colleagues.
