I am absolutely certain that doing this has helped me to make not just faster career progress, but to target my learning and skill building in the right areas. The more firmly you have your finger on the pulse of your industry, the better you’ll be able to shape your career path within it.

I co-founded my first company when I was 19. I was still in college and I had no idea what I didn't know. In the first 2 years, the business grew rapidly and we were making a lot of money for recent college grads. I knew I needed to learn from others with more experience than us so I started researching entrepreneurs on LinkedIn and inviting them to get coffee together. One coffee meeting led to a mentor that helped me and my business partner through the next 2-3 years of the business. And let me tell you, the business was growing quickly, we were spending a lot of money on hiring a team, and there was a lot changing in the eCommerce industry which we were in. This mentor helped me go through some of the lowest times of my entrepreneurial career. He taught me key lessons on "letting go if a project isn't working after 6 months to 1 year of investing time and money into it" and "being brutally honest and open when going through layoffs."
