In my research, we have shown that chronic stress can negatively impact memory by preventing newly formed information from being incorporated into the key brain areas used for long term storage. However, stress gets a bad rap, because mild/moderate stress can actually be beneficial in helping us focus on information that is important in our world. So the mantra "everything in moderation" perfectly applies to the relationship between stress and memory.....too much and it overwhelms your brain's ability to process memories, but in smaller doses it can prime our brain for maximizing our learning
Stress has a complex relationship with memory. Stress, when experienced in moderate amounts, can improve memory, both storing and retrieving them. The well-known Yerkes-Dodson Law (1908) implies that optimal levels of arousal, including stress, can improve cognitive performance. In my practice, I often see clients who, under moderate stress, perform really well in their jobs, are alert, and able to recall important details. This is in line with more recent research that also suggests that stress hormones like cortisol can enhance memory, at least in the short term (McEwen & Sapolsky, 1995). However, chronic or excessive stress has damaging effects on memory, particularly on the hippocampus, a brain region responsible for memories. Many clients report difficulties with memory during periods of prolonged stress, due to elevated levels of cortisol. High levels of cortisol, can in fact impair the hippocampus’s ability to function, as shown by research by Lupien et al. (2009). This is especially true for clients with high chronic stress or trauma histories, as they often struggle with memory fragmentation or memory loss, a phenomenon commonly seen in individuals with PTSD. When we manage stress, it is important to keep this dual impact in mind. By reducing chronic stress through mindfulness, relaxation techniques, or cognitive restructuring, I have seen clients improve their memory function and overall mental health. At the same time, I also helped individuals to find more stimulating environments or jobs, leaving boredom and forgetfulness behind - balance, as always, is what I would suggest.
