About eight years ago, I swapped my morning news routine for TED Talks over breakfast. For the next five years, I watched at least one talk every day. TED Talks opened my eyes to the incredible power of bite-sized learning. I saw the ripple effects in both my mindset and my career. I was captivated by the real-world experiences and stories in these talks. One that left a lasting impact was Barbara Sher's "Isolation is the Dream-Killer, Not Your Attitude." I was always reluctant to ask for help at work, fearing it might undermine my credibility. But when I started seeking support from my team, our dynamics changed, and I noticed my colleagues started asking for help as well. TED Talks gave me countless sparks of creativity, influencing everything from my marketing campaigns to training sessions materials. No matter the discussion in the room, I had a relevant TED Talk to draw inspiration from. They also transformed the way I presented in meetings. I stopped burning time on PowerPoints and used more storytelling, which enhanced my credibility. Colleagues reached out for recommendations, and my manager even joked, "When are you going to give a TED Talk of your own?" TED is an exceptional learning resource, completely free. And it has taught me two of the most undervalued skills in any career: curiosity and simplicity. Today, I'm still an avid fan of TED, particularly TED-Ed videos that make complex ideas accessible. And this month, I attended my first live event!

I'd tried everything I knew, but the problem just wouldn't budge. I ended up turning to Stack Overflow, searching through various threads for a solution. After some serious digging, I stumbled on an idea that seemed like it might work. I took a walk across campus, letting the idea simmer in my mind, and by the time I got back to my computer, I had the insight I needed. I applied the solution, and it finally worked! When I founded my boutique consulting firm in 2023, I quickly assembled a team of advisors to fill a similar role, guiding me as I developed our value proposition, service offerings, and business strategy. Unlike specific training or advice from blogs, or even AI, a coach or advisor provides adaptable support, exploring uncharted territory with you to bring out your best ideas. There's nothing more empowering than discovering you already have the ideas and tools needed to overcome challenges-an insight that a great coach helps to unlock. For these reasons, I believe dedicated mentors or an executive coach are the most effective resources for continuous learning and development, especially during pivotal career moments.

I agree that continuous learning and development are crucial at every stage of our careers, and I love LinkedIn Learning because it offers a wide range of courses that help me keep up with changes in my industry since digital marketing is constantly evolving. The Feynman Technique is my favorite learning method, and all you need is a simple notebook. It's named after this brilliant scientist, Richard Feynman. The idea is to take something complicated and explain it like you're talking to a fifth-grader. I do this with all the complex digital marketing strategies and new tech stuff I come across. I write it down, then try to explain it in plain English. It's amazing how quickly you figure out what you don't really understand. For me, it has been learning languages. Specifically, Spanish, French and Japanese. I spend about 2 hours a week working with a language tutor. There's nothing quick about learning languages, but over the years I have gotten to a decent level in all three. By knowing the basics of these languages, I've been able to connect with potential clients that come from other countries, and this makes it easier and more comfortable to do business with me. Even though most of our meetings are in English, just knowing I understand them more deeply makes a huge difference. I'm also showing respect for where they come from - I've tried to learn about them. I remember one meeting with a French potential client - it wasn't until we switched to French that he opened up to me and started smiling, telling me all about where he was from. That was a huge moment in developing the relationship further. This has happened again and again, proving that learning languages has truly changed my career and helped me gain new clients through connecting with them in their language.

I've found the Chartered Institute of Marketing very helpful for keeping my skills up to date. Their resources, especially the webinars and training sessions, have been great for my ongoing learning. What I like most is how practical their materials are. They offer useful frameworks and examples of best practices that help me keep up with new marketing trends and strategies. For instance, after watching a CIM webinar about in-person events, I came up with a new approach for our team at trade shows. I am an avid learner. I absolutely love it. My most valuable learning resource has been the public library. It offers a quiet place to work and learn, browse by topic, and dive deeper into things I want to learn about. I've used the library to build on French skills developed in Duolingo by checking out beginner French books, I've learned floor plan and rendering styles for architecture and design classes from drafting manuals, and I've learned art history from extensive volumes covering artists, styles, and time periods.
