As a former policy advisor to a trade association, I've had firsthand experience of how influential industry associations or groups can be in regulatory processes. Today, these organizations represent a collective voice for their members and deliver their members' concerns, expertise, and recommendations to policymakers. My Experience My association represented a collection of small to medium renewable energy companies during my tenure. We built strong relationships with regulatory agencies, lawmakers, and external stakeholders to influence policies in a way that benefited our industry and helped it to thrive. Example: Net Metering Policy Our association had a significant impact in several areas, but one example really stands out for me: We played a significant role in shaping the net metering policy here in our state. Net metering enables homeowners and small businesses to create their own renewable energy and sell any surplus of it back to the grid. We, our association, realized that the well-established net metering policy was acting as barrier in adoption of renewable energy technologies. We convened a working group of industry stakeholders, policymakers, and regulatory agencies to explore the problem and shed light on solutions. This partnership led to the creation of an extensive report detailing the advantages of updated net metering policies, such as expanded use of renewable energy and economic development. Outcome Its still a case that we moved in the right direction and as a result of the hard work of our association, the state house passed a modified net metering policy that will only help the growth of renewable energy technologies. The new policy eliminated obstacles to adoption. Impact The new policy had a profound effect on our industry: 1. Greater Take-Up: The amended policy resulted in a spike in renewable energy uptake, reflected in a 25% increase in net metering systems installed in year 1. 2. Green Jobs: The renewable energy sector's growth created jobs, with a 15% increase in employment in the industry. Key Takeaways II. How industry associations shape regulations. 1. II. Expertise Associations have individuals who can provide policymakers insight and experts recommend to policymakers. 2. Coalition Building: Associations have the capacity to form coalitions with various stakeholders-regulatory bodies, legislators, and community organizations-to lobby for regulations that serve their interests.
