The technology uses a gel between two glass panels that changes opacity when an electrical current is applied. This feature enhances the flying experience in several meaningful ways. First, it allows passengers to reduce glare and heat from direct sunlight without completely blocking the view outside. On traditional aircraft, you either have full sun blasting through or a completely blocked view. The Dreamliner lets you find a comfortable middle ground where you can still see the clouds and landscape below while keeping the cabin comfortable. Second, the airline can dim all windows simultaneously during sleep periods on long-haul flights, which creates a much more consistent and restful cabin environment than relying on every individual passenger to close their shade. Anyone who has tried to sleep on a daytime long-haul flight while the person three rows ahead keeps their shade open knows this pain. From a technology perspective, what fascinates me is the elegance of replacing a mechanical component with an electronic one. No moving parts means less maintenance, less weight, and more reliability. It is a perfect example of how thoughtful engineering can improve the passenger experience while simultaneously reducing operational costs for the airline.
