In any experimental design, integrating ethical considerations is essential to ensure both the safety of participants and the integrity of the research. With over 30 years of experience in musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapy, I prioritize patient welfare and informed consent as core principles in my approach to clinical trials and any experimental therapies we test at The Alignment Studio. Before initiating any study or treatment method, I assess potential risks thoroughly, drawing from my extensive background in sports medicine and orthopaedic rehabilitation. I ensure all participants fully understand the purpose, methods, and potential outcomes of the experiment, creating a transparent environment where questions and concerns are openly addressed. One example that highlights this approach was when we were developing a novel treatment program focused on addressing chronic lower back pain. Chronic pain treatments can often push the boundaries of traditional physiotherapy, so I worked with my team to design a rigorous protocol that prioritised patient safety. Using my expertise, we implemented gradual progression in therapy intensity and continuous monitoring to identify and address any adverse responses immediately. Each participant received comprehensive education about posture and ergonomics, allowing them to manage their symptoms better and make informed decisions during the treatment. This ethical framework not only led to better outcomes and participant satisfaction but also allowed us to publish data with confidence, knowing it met the highest ethical and professional standards.
