I am Alexzandra Aguirre, the CEO and Lead Designer at Phoenix Interior Design LLC, an independent interior design firm located in the U.S. For the last few years, my team and I have incorporated wallpapered ceilings on a number of residential and boutique commercial projects. This addition provides clients with an opportunity to broaden the design and add warmth and an element of surprise to their interiors. It allows for the transformation of ordinary spaces into captivating and personal environments. Wallpapered ceilings effectively draw the eye upward and add balance to otherwise boxy and flat interiors. For example, the use of more understated embossed wallpaper on ceilings in the bedroom and powder room creates a warmer cocoon effect. In contrast, bolder metallic and floral patterns on the wallpapered ceiling in the dining room create drama and opulence to the space. Success relies on coordinating the patterns on the ceiling with the tones and lighting on the walls. For those interested in trying this approach, I suggest starting in a small space, like a hallway or guest room, and using high-quality, removable wallpapers. Patterns that have dimension and soft color gradients can reflect light in very lovely ways. I can show you wallpapers from three of our recent projects where the transformation and mood from the wallpapered ceilings and also changed the rooms in the wallpapers spatial perception.

A few years ago, I assisted a friend in Guangzhou in sourcing custom wallpaper for her boutique, and was surprised when she put it up on the ceiling instead of the walls. I thought this was peculiar at first, but once installed it dressed the space and drew the eyes up and made a small room feel even twice its size. Later on, at SourcingXPro, we sourced similar ceiling wallpapers for 3 hospitality clients who wanted that "wow" factor without the disgusting renovation costs. The thing was the use of light reflecting, textures and keeping the walls neutral in order to balance it out. This is a bold move, but if well done, will give an intentional effect rather than a gimmicky look.
Hi, I'm Bob Coulston, founder of Coulston Construction. We're a fourth-generation contractor here in Kansas City. Even though my company focuses on construction, we often work with designers and homeowners on creative finishes that improve everyday spaces. I've personally seen how wallpaper on a ceiling can really change a room's whole feel. Using wallpaper on ceilings is a great way to add warmth and visual interest to a space, but people don't do it enough. When done well, it makes a room feel taller and more put-together, especially if you plan the wall color and trim with it in mind. I've used this approach in dining rooms and bedrooms to add some pattern and texture without going overboard. The trick is to keep the rest of the room simple. Think light wall colors and matching lights and furniture. Grasscloth textures or similar patterns are good choices because they add dimension but don't take over the space. If homeowners want to try this, I suggest starting with smaller rooms like bathrooms or offices. That way, the effect is noticeable but not too much. A wallpapered ceiling, done right, can really make a room feel special and welcoming.
