As an Executive Career Coach who has empowered hundreds of candidates across 35 countries to secure their next role, I've found that certain resume strategies consistently deliver results even in competitive markets. The fundamental principle is simple: Hiring managers don't care about you, they care about what you can do for them. Too often, I see resumes wasting everyone's time because they fail to connect with the actual role requirements. One strategy that helps my clients stand out is reverse engineering the process. Start with the job description and tailor your resume accordingly. After a tailored introduction, this is followed by a "Key Achievements" or "Career Highlights" section that brings your most relevant accomplishments to the forefront. We treat keywords as problems to be solved. Use the exact keywords from the job description as section headers, then showcase relevant achievements demonstrating how you've solved similar challenges previously. Each company has their own "jargon", so when we use their lingo, it makes it easier to build rapport. For senior leaders, I recommend including at least five distinct examples. This approach offers several advantages: * It positions your most relevant achievements upfront, regardless of when you did this * It highlights your achievements before any potential career gaps, leading the focus where you want it to go. * It makes it easy for hiring managers to quickly see your fit without reading between the lines In today's competitive landscape, we stand out by quickly and easily by showing how we can fit in.
