I have been a teacher for 23 years and currently teach art grades 3-5. I am a National Board Certified Teacher and the 2014 West Virginia Teacher of the Year. 1 - Online licensure programs can be as effective as in-person preparation as long as they are accompanied by actual practicum experiences in the classroom. The instruction and knowledge obtained by any program should require teacher education students to have experience putting what they have learned into practice before graduation. 2 - The most essential soft skill for early career teachers is flexibility. Education is always changing. Students are very diverse in their needs and what they bring to the classroom environment Being able to adapt is essential. Another soft skill is time management. Being intentional about time is essential for longevity in the teaching profession. 3 - A misconception students may have about online programs is that they are easier. Often, learning online, especially when much of the learning is asynchronous, requires a lot of discipline and commitment on the students' part. 4 - In a teaching program you learn education theory, subject area content, pedagogical skills to create learning experiences, and practicum to put the knowledge learned to use. 5 - The best state may be difficult to quantify based on what matters most to a person pursing an education degree. It is better to focus on the school district - and even more so, the school itself - for the qualities that make a desirable teaching environment. Some of the things to take into consideration are pay, benefits, distance to school or place of work, expectations regarding licensure or future degrees, and district/school work environment. 6 - You may find opportunities in academic coaching, school interventionist, technology specialist, or curriculum development. State certification determines what area or position you are certified for. While a licensure program prepares you for teaching, you still need to pass the Praxis or assessment your state requires to be a certified teacher. Many states offer emergency or temporary certification to get teachers in classrooms where there is a shortage. 7 - Teaching is a rewarding but demanding profession. It's important to balance your time and allow yourself to be a person outside of the classroom in order to avoid burnout. The world needs people with a desire to help children learn and become what they are meant to be, and it's an honor every day to be a part of it.
Online teacher licensure programs can be as effective as in-person ones if they are well-structured and accredited, emphasizing quality curriculum, instructor interaction, and practical experience like student teaching. Programs that promote real-time collaboration and mentorship lead to successful graduate outcomes. A case study indicates that graduates from a respected online program achieve job placements and student performance on par with in-person graduates.
