Managing a child's anxiety during their first dental visit all starts with taking a deep breath and just slowing the whole thing right down. See, a lot of the time fear comes from not knowing what's going to happen, so I make a real effort to stay in control and predictable. I take my time to explain every single step in super simple words before I actually do it and let the kid get a feel for some of the tools they'll be using it's great for removing any surprises. This approach really helps to knock fear on the head because the kid gets to feel like they're part of it, not stuck in some dark corner. I also try to mirror the kid's body language and keep my voice nice and calm kids pick up on all that stuff subconsciously. Giving them some small choices maybe where they sit or what music they listen to just helps build up that trust a lot quicker. Over time this approach has actually helped turn panic into curiosity which is pretty amazing. I get reports from parents afterwards that their kid asks loads fewer questions the next time they come in and walks in with a lot less resistance which is a clear sign to me the fear really has gone down.
